You actually learn to read it

Each floor has its own script. You note a glyph, guess its meaning from context, and the game confirms it when your page of guesses holds together. Nothing is ever translated for you.

Stealth and observation

Guards patrol the levels and you get past them by watching, timing and sometimes by using what you have just learned to read a sign.
